Love the article. I also feel that there is no excuse for not answering messages or e-mails. Like you said - you can copy and paste a reply or even have an automated standard message ready to go.

There really is no excuse for not responding. The real reason is that the people just don't care enough to respond. They don't see a direct connection to their bottom line so they ignore them. You can bet that if they received $1 for each response they sent that they would never ignore another message again :)

Gil - thanks for this post! Very illuminating. If you don't mind I think I will refer to it and adapt it for a blog post of my own, to do with personal life - friends and dating relationships and volunteer situations alike. A pet peeve of mine too, and I have to plead guilty (not in work but in personal situations) and try to amend my ways!

Hi Barking Unicorn,

Thanks for your comments.

I wrote a bit about what you are saying here in an article called – A Simple Smile.
http://www.synaptici.com/2009/a-simple-smile/

I would encourage you to know that not everyone behaves this way. The world is full of good people. I see acts of kindness every day. Alas, bad news travels so much quicker and makes for better headlines.

There is hope Barking Unicorn!

Cheers,
Gil

"Manners require time, and nothing is more vulgar than haste." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

To ignore a human being is the cruelest thing you can do to one legally, and the most vulgar. it is commonplace today.

We ignore emails, voicemail, texts, elevator companions, cubicle pod "mates", passerby in the hallways of the office and on the street. We ignore the homeless, fellow bus or train riders and even the drivers.

We are cruel and vulgar almost every second that we spend out of our homes... and many are ignored right at home, too.

The karma of ignoring others is that which you cannot ignore: slacking & sabotaging subordinates; discussions of "high turnover" during your annual review; customers' calls to your CEO about you; a cheating or divorcing spouse; a bus that splashes you instead of stopping for you; a mugging; a rape...

Make time for manners, or accept the karma of vulgarity and cruelty.
